Hurricane Bob approaching New England on August 19 at 1226 UTC (1991)

c/photography@lemmy.world by
Innerworld@lemmy.world

Hurricane Bob was a Category 3 Atlantic hurricane which made landfall in the New England region of the United States in 1991. The second named storm and first hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season, it formed near The Bahamas on August 16 and moved northward, brushing the Outer Banks of North Carolina before strengthening. Bob made landfall twice in Rhode Island on August 19, first on Block Island and then near Newport, before weakening over Maine and becoming extratropical in New Brunswick, Canada. The storm caused 18 deaths, left millions without power, and was one of the costliest tropical cyclones in New England history, causing around $1.5 billion in damage. The name Bob was later retired. This satellite photograph shows Bob approaching New England near peak intensity on August 19.

Landscape in IR [Olympus E-PL1, OM System 25mm f1.8 II, 720nm IR filter]

c/photography@lemmy.world by
gerryflap@feddit.nl
A black and white (infrared) shot of grassland, with trees in the distance and clouds towering over the landscape. Due to it being infrared only, the foliage appears bright white in the sunlight and the sky above the clouds is almost pitch black

I recently converted a cheap, partially broken, E-PL1 to be full spectrum sensitive by removing the filter that cuts UV/IR light. Despite this being a relatively cheap and old camera, the 12-ish megapixels combined with the razor sharp 25mm (50mm full-frame equivalent) honestly delivers plenty of detail.

Thinking of leaving Manjaro after the AUR supply chain attack – Distrochooser recommends SUSE, what's your take? (distrochooser.de)

Community iconc/linux@lemmy.ml by
PumpkinDrama@reddthat.com

With the recent AUR supply-chain attack that compromised over 400 (and possibly up to 1,500) packages, I’m seriously considering switching distros. Attackers took over orphaned packages and modified PKGBUILDs to pull in malicious npm dependencies like atomic-lockfile, which deployed credential-stealing malware and even eBPF rootkits. The fact that the trusted packages themselves didn’t look malicious makes this especially concerning.

Hi, Just wondering if Someone can help me out. I previously downloaded PIA but have uninstalled it some time ago with the sudo apt purge. However, I’ve now found that there is still ongoing network activity through the Pihole. I’ve attempted to look through the DPKG –list as well as the apt list which does gave “pia/noble 3.107-2build” (however purge states there is no pia installed), but can’t seem to uninstall PIA any further. Does anyone know how I can further uninstall any packages so that this is no longer occurring? For now ive blocked access through pihole.

Maybe younger people won’t appreciate this as much, having grown up when this weren’t so rare, but nothing quite illustrates to me how far Linux has come than browsing Amazon and seeing “Linux” listed as a first-class citizen on product images. Not buried in the details, not answered in a FAQ, but right there on the product image at the top of the listing. Many of you will remember having to dig through wikis and forums to uncover whether a product was compatible with Linux; and sometimes you still do.

Advice on an early-2015 Macbook Air (8GB)

Community iconc/linux@lemmy.world by
wjrii@lemmy.world

I am planning to use this as a lightweight travel machine, smaller than my ThinkPad P15v and better than the Chrome-Tab I frankensteined into a linux tablet. I got the Macbook (in great physical condition), a new battery, and a USB-C to magsafe2 adapter for about USD 85. I’m currently calibrating the new battery, which I’m doing in EoL MacOS Monterey, but right now the plan is to replace it with MX Linux, which on the Live USB already had the Broadcom Wifi drivers. I also like Snapless distros using apt and KDE Plasma. Then, finally, I used to daily Mepis Linux years and years ago, so part of me was pleased it sort of lives on. I run Tuxedo OS on a couple of other machines, so if there’s some very good reason to, I would be willing to take my chances that getting the Wifi up and running would go smoothly. Any very strong thoughts about distros on this hardware?

10 Days of Venus and Jupiter

Venus and Jupiter may have caught your attention lately. The recent close conjunction of the two brightest planets in recent evening skies has been hard to miss. With Jupiter at the top, starting on May 30 and ending on June 8, their close approach was chronicled daily, left to right, in the featured panels from Maharashtra, India. Near the western horizon, the evening sky colors and exposures used for each panel depend on the local conditions near sunset. At their closest on June 9, the celestial pair appeared to be only about three times the width of a full moon apart. Of course, on that date, the two planets were physically separated by over 600 million kilometers in their orbits around the Sun. In the coming days, Jupiter will slowly settle into the sunset glare, but Venus will continue to move farther from the Sun in the western sky to excel in its current role as the brilliant evening star.

I can’t launch games on Steam for some reason, at least Windows games using Proton. I even reinstalled Steam several times, but nothing has changed. My distro is Pop OS. Here’s what happens when I try launching Vanquish for example:
