Hey guys! I just wanted to share a proof of concept real quick. No hate at all to GIMP or Pinta, but I just really love Paint.net as I've been using it for over a decade. And since I completely switched over to Arch a year ago, that means the only way I can enjoy using Paint.net again is if I add all the missing Direct 2D implementations. How hard could it be? 😅

A dream of a Linux distribution where the entire desktop environment is Win32 software running under WINE. A completely free and open-source OS where you can just download .exe files and run them, for the power user who isn't necessarily a Unixhead, or just for someone who thinks this sounds fun.

It's typically rare these days for the ATA subsystem updates in the Linux kernel to contain anything really noteworthy. But today some important fixes were merged for the ATA code to deal with a reported power management regression affecting the past number of Linux kernel releases over the last year. ATAPI devices with dummy ports weren't hitting their low-power state and in turn preventing the CPU from reaching low-power C-states but thankfully that is now resolved with this code.

Your new project really could use a block device for Linux. File systems are easy to do with FUSE, but that’s sometimes too high-level. But a block driver can be tough to write and debug, especially since bugs in the kernel’s space can be catastrophic. [Jiri Pospisil] suggests Ublk, a framework for writing block devices in user space. This works using the io_uring facility in recent kernels.

GNU InetUtils Security Advisory: remote authentication by-pass in telnetd (vulnerability.circl.lu)

Community iconc/cybersecurityby
cm0002@lemmings.world

The telnetd server invokes /usr/bin/login (normally running as root) passing the value of the USER environment variable received from the client as the last parameter. If the client supply a carefully crafted USER environment value being the string "-f root", and passes the telnet(1) -a or --login parameter to send this USER environment to the server, the client will be automatically logged in as root bypassing normal authentication processes. This happens because the telnetd server do not sanitize the USER environment variable before passing it on to login(1), and login(1) uses the -f parameter to by-pass normal authentication. Severity: High Vulnerable versions: GNU InetUtils since version 1.9.3 up to and including version 2.7.

An alternate path for immutable distributions (lwn.net)

Community iconc/linuxby

LWN has had a number of articles on immutable distributions, such as Bluefin and Bazzite, in recent years. These distributions have taken a variety of approaches, including using rpm-ostree, filesystem snapshots, and bootable container (bootc) images. But those approaches, especially the latter, lead to extra complexity for a user attempting to install new software, instead of just using the existing package manager. AshOS (Any Snapshot Hierarchical OS) is an experimental AGPL-3-licensed "meta-distribution" that tried a different approach more in line with traditional package management. Although the project is no longer updated, it remains usable, and can still shed some light on a potential alternate path for users worried about adopting bootc-based approaches.

Every year, at the end of January and the beginning of February, thousands of people from Europe and around the world gather in Brussels to discuss open source and open technologies. The main attraction is FOSDEM, Europe’s largest open source conference, which has inspired a range of side events, social activities, and workshops. For those interested in open technology, digital policy, and EU developments, OpenForum Europe’s EU Open Source Policy Summit brings together open source leaders and policymakers. Together, these events make up the EU Open Source Week.

Dissecting CrashFix: KongTuke's New Toy | Huntress (huntress.com)

In January 2026, Huntress Senior Security Operations Analyst Tanner Filip observed threat actors using a malicious browser extension to display a fake security warning, claiming the browser had "stopped abnormally" and prompting users to run a “scan” to remediate the threats. Our analysis revealed this campaign is the work of KongTuke, a threat actor we have been tracking since the beginning of 2025. In this latest operation, we identified several new developments: a malicious browser extension called NexShield that impersonates the legitimate uBlock Origin Lite ad blocker, a new ClickFix variant we have dubbed “CrashFix” that intentionally crashes the browser then baits users into running malicious commands, and ModeloRAT, a previously undocumented Python RAT reserved exclusively for domain-joined hosts.
