Community iconc/linuxby merci3@lemmy.world

Single core, 32 bit CPU, can't even do video playback on VLC. But it kinda works for some offline work, like text editing, and even emulation through zsnes! It's crazy how Linux keeps old hardware like this running.

Fan translators asking for payment for latest chapters for comics, webtoons, manhwa, manga...

Community iconc/piracyby themachinestops@lemmy.dbzer0.com

There is a trend currently were fan translaters are paywalling the latest chapters, with poor translations. What are your thoughts on this? I don't mind asking for donations, but asking for money with mediocre translation is scammy.

seriously though unless you actually NEED the size constraint, get an e-waste their laptop and put Debian on it instead of buying a single board computer. there's a bajillion windows 8.1 lappies going into landfill every second that you could turn into funny little servers

Community iconc/piracyby Pro@programming.dev

Fresh data for 2024 reveals that while overall pirate site traffic dipped to 216 billion visits, the landscape is shifting dramatically. Publishing piracy is booming, largely driven by an insatiable global demand for manga. In stark contrast, both music and film piracy have tanked. Despite these changes, the United States remains the top traffic source for pirate sites.

Google Wins Copyright Claim Dismissal in Publishers' Textbook Piracy Lawsuit (torrentfreak.com)

Community iconc/piracyby Pro@programming.dev
a week ago

A lawsuit filed by educational publishers in 2024 accuses Google of profiting from textbook piracy. At the heart of the complaint are claims that Google's ‘systemic and pervasive advertising’ of infringing copies promotes pirated copies sold by third parties.
