‘Pay-for-play’: The hidden deals putting News24/Sky News first on your smart TV

“Millions of Australians who switch on Samsung or LG smart TVs are susceptible to being fed populist right-wing news without choosing to watch it, in what experts believe is an opaque commercial deal between the Korean technology giants and Murdoch’s media empire that pushes News24 content.”

There was eventually no way to disable Samsung TV Plus on my old TV. Any time I was not in an app or viewing something via HDMI, it would default to that. It was not like that at all when I originally bought it, this was something they changed about it via OTA software updates. It never forced Sky/News24 on me while I owned it, though (sold it a few months ago), so either this wasn’t pushed to my model or it is a recent change.
No idea personally, samsung and lg were already on my ‘definitely do not buy’ list.
All of this crap will not be/remain just an issue with these 2 though.
Note: the article is paywalled, but the visible parts should be of interest to those with the affected brands.
I fucking knew it!! I recently got a new Samsung TV and it always, always, promotes SkyNews shit.
I was going to stop using an Apple TV with it but have since switched back to using that because it doesn’t promo shit that I hate.
