Hops and robbers: Why Australian beer needs tax reform

The Australian beer market is dominated by multinational companies, particularly Japan’s Kirin and Asahi, that own once-Australian brands like Carlton United, XXXX, Boags and even “craft” pioneers such as Stone and Wood, Balter and 4 Pines.

Independent breweries have less than 10 per cent of the Australian beer market. Yet our economic and social impact is far greater.

Whilst operating in single-digit market share, independent brewers employ nearly 60 per cent of the people working in Australian brewing, predominantly in small businesses spread across metropolitan, suburban, regional and rural Australia.

Yet tax policy settings make it harder for these Australian businesses to grow, mainly benefiting the multinational corporations.

An informative opinion piece.

I dont know how one can stand XXXX, the only time I ever got hungover by beer was XXXX. I know it shares a status similar to VB among Queenslanders would be glad to learn more

I love vb is great.

Xxxx is just shit beer.

Also you just gotta drink more beers to get hang overs

I usually drink like 7-10 full strength schooners but XXXX was a weird experience

Fair enough.

I drink pints 6 to 9 or so if I’m having a casual time at the pub.

But tend not to get a hangover unless I’m pissing on all day amd have no water.

As I get older that happens less and less
