I remember first visiting the BB back in 1969 as a youngster. Amazing.
Revisited a couple of years ago. Thoroughly underwhelming and a massive - 𝘮𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦 - grab for your wallet.
To be brutally honest, it's time.
Cannot flipping wait! Nothing worse than being in the centre lane in town, needing to take a left turn but the left lane has 6 B-doubles in it, all nose to tail, all hard on it between lights.
I honestly doubt there’s going to be much impact on businesses. Anyone stopping was probably planning to stop anyway, and the traffic that’s going around never had any intention. The only place that might lose out a little bit is the service centre on the south side of town, but I’m sure BP and Maccas and Subway will figure something out.
It seems likely to me that people will make the same number of stops in their trip from Brisbane to Sydney or wherever. But where before they might’ve stopped at the Big Banana or elsewhere in Coffs, now they might drive another half hour before they pull off, or stop a bit earlier. So Coffs might lose out, but the Mid North Coast region as a whole probably won’t be negatively affected.
I suspect very few people are stopping at the banana unless that’s their destination. It’s not a convenient stop. On the northbound side you’ve got the south Coffs BP service centre, then half an hour each side Nambucca and halfway creek, all far better options than the banana for a road stop.
Alternative headline,
Big Banana Split
Big banana is not gonna lose custom. We had similar sooks on the south road extension. Turned out not having a bunch of speeding dickheads up your arse made people more likely to hit up the stores the traffic left
