I don’t like them as a company, but If Discord gives a shit enough to invest in the Linux client to capture more users, Linux is on the right track to grow even more. They don’t care about Linux current user base. They want the user base of what it can become.
To late Discord deleted my account and not going back.
Same. If only there were another Discord-like client that my friends were willing to use. I tried getting them onto Stoat, but I’m starting to lose faith that Stoat can become the next Discord.
Or just use fluxer? If you want a discord clone why the fuck are you trying to make a totally different program behave like discord. That defeats the entire purpose of matrix.
Just go use an actual clone.
Moving from discord to fluxer, stoat, etc, is like moving from shitter to bluesky. All centralized platforms will eventually go to shit.
Not of they are self-hostable…? I don’t know what the progress is for Fluxer self hosting, but if it comes through like they have ‘promised’ then I’m excited for it as the next place to go.
Fluxer seems to be the best candidate alternative. Currently AGPL, with plans to provide self-hosting, federation, and E2EE.
Fluxer is sitting RIGHT there looking at you like yer blind. Stoat literally will never go anywhere. Its made zero fucking progress basically since day 1 is ran by idiots and smalls like a scam from a mile away.
The fact anyone has even remotely considered stoat is honestly concerning.
If by “invest” you mean paying one person a few hours weekly to create an Electron app, then there’s already plenty of companies doing that. None of which have declared the year of the linux desktop for it. Or maybe all of them, who knows. It’s the decade of the year of the linux desktop.
Not a fan of discord lately, but I’m definetly in favor of more mainstream Linux support regardless of the source
i would think they would just focus on the flatpak instead of distro specific formats? and, i know there’s an issue with audio sharing apps on pipewire, is that fixed?
but with all the ID crap etc and alternative apps getting pretty good (eying fluxer) maybe i will just jump to another app.
still great to see good discord improvements.
I do wish they’d publish a proper apt repo instead of making me install the .deb everytime.
They FINALLY fixed the update system on arch so you arnt told to install a deb every time update. Its been like 6 years
Fuckin finally.
I checked a few months ago, and having never deleted them, had racked up multiple gigabytes of Discord updates in my downloads directory

I’ll believe them when they bother to fix the five year old issue that completely breaks audio on desktop sharing they’ve left the Linux client to rot with.
Vesktop has working screen sharing (and other goodies)

Thanks. I’ve actually been using that for a while now.
It’s not reliable for my setup and I haven’t figured out why. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I had that issue too but it has worked fine for some months. I assumed they’d fixed it
Well if discord is claiming this, it must be true! /s
I’ll trust the stream survey results to determine if this is actually the year… Thanks
Kind of stuck with Discord for the moment, but I’ve just been using a separate Firefox profile dedicated to the service. It’s nice seeing multiple accounts at once and having easy access to extensions.
Fluxer.app seems to be the alternative that’s gaining ground.
With European governments bucking Windows, sure, it’s likely to have some growth.
Hahahaha
Pretty sure the first time I heard this was around 2000
Huge advertisement for linux. Discord joining steam in open support for linux will bring quite a few people over.
