A paperbark tree on New Street in Bondi was pruned by a group of high-vis wearing men wielding chainsaws, who claimed they were from the local council. However, this was all a ruse, and was in fact an act of illegal vandalism which is under investigation.
Look for the people with a house that's view was blocked by the tree. Look into complaints about the tree with city council.
Edit to add: it wasn't blocking a view and other trees on the street were poisoned so I would look into complaints from locals about the trees because people angry enough to poison or prune a tree weren't likely to be silent about their hate.
